Spotlight

November 30, 2007

I'm a bit curious why the light inside our room is getting cranky at times.  We experience dim nights occasionally.  So the only solution is to turn on the lamp shade which does a little help but is not sufficient to cover all areas of the room specially the cabinet. Hope this won't carry on for a long time. Or else I will request the housing office to install proper home lighting or modify the light fixtures in our room.

Christmas is getting nearer and I wish to add up some bathroom fixtures so it would be more comfortable to use.  I'm expecting some friends to be in our house on Christmas Eve.

With all the activities that are keeping me occupied, I wonder if my wish would come true.  Anyway, this can wait.  First things first.

Freezing Friday

The temperature is dropping each day but of no significance compared to western countries.  I have closed all our windows, exhaust fan and even bathroom ventilations. It is always a battle waking up and facing bath time. Brrrrr….I wish I could install the water heater stored on our unused closet.

Hence, I felt more active after taking cold shower compared to the lukewarm.  My body temperature can adjust easily with the weather outside our house. Still I'm happy despite of the coldness. For there's no rain to bother me and my warm clothes were put into good use.

Storing My Precious Photos and Music Collections

I have tons of digital photos stored as a product of my hobby in photography. I also have lots of music collections of the favorite singers and Christian music. I make regular backups of the files that I have on my external drive. Never take chances on your data, sometimes the harddisk goes amok dead and there goes the precious data.

One day even my external drive was not spared; it fell off the floor and oh.. all of my precious data was in there. I was lucky at that time that I have recovered my data and it opened my eye to the possibility of having an Online Storage to back up my data. I have heard of an application IBackup Drive that could be installed on local computers. It is a remote storage that could be mapped to the local drive of the local computer. After which one can use it like any other local drive of Windows.

It's easy to use, similar to using a regular drag-n-drop, copy and paste of Windows explorer to backup files. This is very could be a safer way for me to keep my treasured photo and music files.

A Fulfilling First Day of Caroling

The AIT Catholic Community, every year, goes around houses in greater Bangkok to bring the joyful tidings of Christmas and to raise funds for the orphan and AIDS patients in the slums of Mercy Centre, Klong Toey. Today, we started our first caroling within the campus of AIT.

The first house we caroled was a non-Christian family who were from Indian origin. They invited us to sing them carols each year. This year was quite special for they have their relatives joining them for the evening. The response was overwhelming as everyone got teary eyed by our songs.

We are really blessed to be part of this fulfilling activity of the community.  God is really good.

Something Special for the Holiday

November 29, 2007

Holiday is just around the corner. I am still busy thinking of what special gifts will guys love to have this coming Christmas.

My hubby has long been used to without a wrist watch, so I am not really sure if a Wenger Titanium XL Watch coming from Swiss Outpost will be okey for him. Since he likes to play tennis, one possibility would be to buy him some extra Head Ti S6 Performance Tennis Racquet from Team Store. He likes computers very much too, so I could get him some brand new laptop, the small and sleek one for his travels.

It's somehow difficult to choose what to buy but for sure i'll use some online shopping coupons to get a little extra milleage out of my budget. To make things easier, maybe I'll just buy some long range lens for my digital camera.=)

Bread of the Day

It's already late yet I'm still glued on the net checking emails, doing some posts on my blogs and chatting with family and friends. I was greeted with the aroma of  a freshly baked bread from the kitchen. I'm about to sleep at 12:00 midnight but this sudden treat woke me up. My hubby baked some Spanish bread with butter and sugar fillings.

We ate it together with hot chocolate and left some for breakfast. We ended the day with a bread and will be starting again with it. So goes our daily bread.

In Need of Scanners

November 28, 2007

Three months had past and I noticed that I have neglected a favor for my SIL (sister-in-law).  They left me a box of photos that has to be scanned and turn it into electronic files and place it on DVD. I never had a chance to install the scanner at home that's why until now I haven't touched any of those pictures yet.

Photo Scanning is easy when you have Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw/ Photopaint installed in your computer.  You can immediately resize the photo size and modify the pixels per inch of the image. It's also possible to edit its appearance so it would look newer than the original.  Although most of the scanners now come with installers, in case you don't have photo scanning tool, it's better to use the softwares mentioned above.

Pick up and delivery service to scan your old photos services is what I badly need right now. Hiring scanners to do on my behalf is more convenient and time saving. Lest there's no company that offers such assistance nearby.  Then I'll be forced to do it on weekends.

Fond of Foodland

November 27, 2007

It's not often that I go to Foodland for grocery for few reasons:
1. It's too far from our place.
2. They only accept cash.  So you must come prepared.

Last week, Tony and I had a free ride with Kuya Art from the church in Bangkok to AIT and it so happened that he's dropping by Foodland, IT Square branch to buy some food supplies. We accompanied him inside and had a frantic shopping for half an hour. One of the best reason to go there is buying fresh Bangus (Philippine national fish also known as Milk Fish).  You can never find it anywhere else in Thailand except in Foodland.

My Agent 007 Dream House

My dream house seems so far off and unrealistic.  I was told to dream unrealistically by one of my mentor before, after all most of the things that are made now were impossible way back then.  Including the airplane, mobile phones, Internet, stem-cells etc.

I imagine of having it built in an island with a helipad (grammatical contraction meaning helicopter landing pad), underwater aquarium, tunnel for speed boat passage and solar powered.  Most likely, it would be similar to that in the Thunderbirds movie.

Homes for Sale offering a built in and customized designs to match the fancy of the clients is invaluable.  It is considerable to look for real estate brokers in realestatebook.com for professional assistance and the assurance of getting the excellent choice.

Home buying tips:
1. Get professional help.
2. Never buy if you are not willing to settle for a long time.
3. Clean your credit history.
4. Make sure you are a member of any Housing Loan Program if you can't afford to pay it cash.
5. Aim for affordable ones.
6. Find a good location.
7. Make a lot of research before bidding.

Techie Kids

MP3,  MP4 and iPod players often reminds me of my nephew R-vin.  Before he left for Finland he was making all the effort to pass all his grades so he could ask a favor from his dad.  He asked what gift would be better, a laptop or an iPod.  I was certain he would choose iPod because they already have PC at home. And he's not really into computer applications yet but only for online gaming.

Kids are really so advanced these days.  I wonder what will happen if everything turns wireless in the future. Would they also ask for chip transplants ahead of their parents?

Ms. Noppamas Beauty Pageant

Lots of things took place during the Loy Krathong Festival last Saturday. One of which is the search for Nang Noppamas (Ms. Noppamas beauty contest).

Part of the history of Loy Krathong Festival is the search for the most beautiful and talented lady.  It first took place in Sukothai, the first capital city of Thailand. This tradition existed through the effort of a woman named "Noppamas", who was the chief royal consort of Sukothai kin. She created the first ever krathong (made of banana stalk, leaves with flower, incense, candlestick ornaments). This pageant is done in her honor.

I Just Can’t Wait

November 26, 2007

"…for what tomorrow brings, I just can't wait for anything", goes BJ's song in the famous Barney show.

I'm a bit giddy for the coming cold season.  Were most of my well kept warm clothes will be put into good use.  Thailand significantly has 3 seasons in a year; the sunny, rainy and cold season. I consider November to early January as my favorite months for its balmy weather and soothing breeze.  You can almost thought we have A/C at home all day. Whereas on summer, argh! The heat is really unbearable sometimes. Not unless I open the fridge and place it inside our room before I sleep.

One of the seasons that I really look forward to is the Spring.  It may not be here in Thailand but in another country like US. I just could imagine smelling the fragrance of the blooming flowers, taking pictures of butterflies and booking for Boston Red Sox Spring Training tickets. I would love to watch softball games on spring while the weather is moderate and with the great company of my friend Therese who's a fanatic of this sports.

Loy Krathong 2007

loykrathong2007

Neon lights are up, vendors selling krathongs for 30 to 40 baht, people lighting and wishing, hundreds of flickering lights  from the candles bobbing up and down, people seated beside the pond watching their krathongs closely, a beauty pageant, food, games, dancing and shopping.  These are just some of the things that I often find in the Rangsit Campus of Thammasat University each year.

Thai people celebrates "Loy Krathong" or the Festival of lights, patterned in Hindu tradition to thank water god.  It is believed to bring good fortune to the people who have wished and prayed upon lighting their krathongs. It is often done on the first full moon of November, marking the end of rainy season, on the nearby rivers and canal as they sing the Loy Krathong song.

November full moon shines,
Loy Krathong, Loy Krathong,
and the water's high in the river and local klong,
Loy Loy Krathong, Loy Loy Krathong,
Loy Krathong is here and everybody's full of cheer,
We're together at the klong,
Each one with his krathong,
As we push away we pray,
We can see a better day.

Away from Home

Friends and family were asking if I'll be going home for Christmas.  Not this time, I said. Though I miss them so much, it is not just possible since my visa is on process and it takes a month to get it done.

It is timely though since I'm currently on tight budget for an urgent responsibility.  I reckon the excitement every time I go home for a holiday in the Philippines.  Only then I tend to be obsessively compulsive whenever the day is getting nearer.  I have to do extra effort to finish all my assignments and delegate my duties to another colleague to whom I can trust.  I have to be physically and financially prepared for the expenditures that may suddenly arise while on travel and at home. All of these adds up to the tension that can sometimes leave me exhausted on the first two days of my holiday spree.

I'll surely miss this opportunity but there will always be prepaid calling cards to rely on if I don't want to miss the action.  Praying I can get through the line when it's time for me to call.

Thankful Thursday 2007- 1st entry

November 22, 2007

No wonder we ate in a good resto earlier.  I now remember that it is Thanksgiving Day. They don't practice it here.  Only then it coincides with my weekly celebration for Thankful Thursday.

This day alone, I am grateful….

1. For waking up in a good mood this morning without being bothered of getting late at work. That's because my bosses are having a great time on their reunion in Philippines.
2. For finishing one of my work assignment.
3. For finishing  2 special requests of  Fr. Gerry.
4. For a hearty dinner at the Vietnamese restaurant with my husband and friends.
5. For the good health that I was able to attend the caroling practice earlier.

Christian Books Publication

I consider reading inspirational and Christian books essential to my mental and spiritual growth. My favorite is Didache, Bo's inspirational books and Chicken Soup for the Soul. They all are great motivational materials that are available on Christian bookstores and online too.

Maybe someday I might write my own Christian book. It's not easy to get a secular publisher; I might need help from Christian Publishers. One good Christian publisher is Authorhouse which offers the highest royalty as high as 50%. They their published books are made available for order at many retail outlets worldwide, on the Internet via Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and their own online store.

If you know of someone who might be having some hard times with a publisher; let them try AuthorHouse. Christian publishing should be easy and fullfilling.

Downloading Video files from YouTube

There are great videos that I found from YouTube. I like the dubbed version of the "300" movie by talibong which is based on Frank Miller's graphic novel about the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. I have posted it before in my site and shared it with my family and friends. Everybody got a good laugh at it.

I was looking for a way to download the FLV file. My hubby told me to use keepvid which is a web based flash video file (FLV) downloader. It's very easy to use just paste the URL of the video source and select the site source and click download. Then what you have is a FLV file on your computer.

Looking for a player for the downloaded FLV file or maybe a converter from FLV to AVI is another thing. But now I can play the files without even connecting to the internet.

Like a Thief in the Night

Cardiac arrest or we normally call heart attack comes like a thief in the middle of the night; it comes without a warning. One time, I have this tragic news of my friend's father that fall prey to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). One should be ready for this kinds of events and be prepared to give a remedy in case we are in the vicinity.

I searched on the net for some useful information about Heart Attack Risk and common symptoms of SCA from which include sudden collapse, loss of consciousness, irregular heartbeat, abnormal breathing, an inability to find a pulse and loss of blood pressure. If you observe one of those signs on a loved one better get immediate help.

We are very thankful to God for it's a miracle that my friends father survived the attack; we are constantly praying for the complete healing and recovery.

Using Nero Vision

November 21, 2007

There are things that I take for granted on my PC that I had helped me a lot in solving my problem.  It felt rewarding to see the result of the mini movie.  My husband helped me a lot in creating a video clip in support for a good cause.  I totally freaked out upon reading my assignment.  So inquired a friend who has done it but in Mac OS that I obviously don't have.  Then came my husband to the rescue who solved my problem without delay.

He used taught me to use Nero Vision for video editing and authoring software.  The downloading of files took  us an hour but the production of the clip was done only in a matter of 30 minutes.

I'm so blessed every day of my life. The Lord always provides all our needs if we call to Him.

Let Them Know You Care

To be in a battle ground is not a joke.  You risk your life, stay away from your family and celebrate holidays in an unusual way. Christmas is a season of love and gift giving.  Let us do something to let them know that we care.

Gallery Collection has teamed up with Soldiers' Angels to make sure that no men and women in heroic service would be left out on special occasions like Christmas. It's possible to send donation by purchasing a Holiday Cards from gallerycollection.com to show your support.

Organizations like Gallery Collection deserves all the accolades or perhaps a medal for this inspiring endeavor.

Christmassy

I had a warm Christmas Caroling practice in Kuya Pats and Ate Carla's house last night. There were 4 tenors, 3 bass, 5 sopranos and 3 altos including me. It was the second practice already, unfortunately I was absent during their first. So I had to make up for the songs I missed.

While we were singing the guitarist noticed that most were too lax and a little offbeat so he took out the Johny Walker for the men and only salabat for the ladies. hehehe He apologized as he forgot to buy a red wine for us.

It was announced that we still have 1 practice more to and we will be caroling on the night of November 29.  Too early? Maybe here it is.  But in Philippines it is definitely not =)

Attention! Apartment for Rent

November 20, 2007

Starting this January or next year the apartment unit in Amvel Mansions will be ready for rental to whoever is interested.  Guaranteed safe and convenient place to stay.  Fully furnished with 1 bedroom with built in kitchen, laundry area, bathroom and living room. Only 5 minutes away from SM Supermarket and 15 minutes going to Mall of Asia. It is located on the 7th floor overlooking the NAIA airport.  The place is very accessible for people who constantly travels by air because it has a shortcut leading to C5 road and then straight to the airport.

Apartments for Rent commonly found at the heart of the city are expected to have a higher rate compared to less urbanized area. It is important that you choose a place that would serve your needs best or else you'll end up packing every now and then.

Here are some possible things to consider in looking for the right apartment.

1. Apartment locator
2. Apartment size and car parking
3. Available facilities in the complex
4. Security and Privacy
5. Rules and Prices

0% offer on Credit Card

Whenever I go shopping on important household materials I always make a chance to inquire about credit card offers with 0% interest payable in 3 to 6 months period.

The only difference of buying goods without this kind of benefit is the possibility of getting billed with interest for delayed payments. If that happens there are ways to get out of this debts. When you have several cards and it's getting hard to manage finances, it's better to turn to credit card consolidation. It simply makes life easier by consolidating all your outstanding credit card debts into one through consolidation loans with a lower interest rate and lower amount of payment.

You can find this services if you apply for MINT credit-cards.  They have special introductory rates for new members. They offer 0% on balance transfers and purchases made until June 2008. Find out more on their website regarding these promotions and reliable services for their valued customers.

GDS Lunch Party

It’s fun to be working with thoughtful colleagues. Today we celebrated Eh Mwee and Anita’s birthday.  We had a potluck lunch party so 8 of us contributed something for the gathering.

I missed Eh Mwee since she just gave birth last month and until now she is still on her maternity leave.  It is my first time to have a glimpse of her beautiful and cuddly baby Olivia.  I took a lot of photos of the baby.  Soon I'm sending it to her mom's email.

My husband and I arrived late for some urgent matters to attend to before going to the party.  It feels when everybody is on a festive mood and not worrying about deadlines in just a short while.

Money Management when Playing Online Games

Many new comers are lured to play online games. They are very eager to try playing the games that professional gamers play like the simple blackjack. It sounds easy when you play an actual game in front of a real card dealer but playing online is a different one.

A lot of people got victimize of this easy to play online games. If one wants to be successful at online games like blackjack there are a few tips to follow. So, before you dive into this online game be sure to learn as much as you can about black jack online game strategy that you plan to play. Another tip is to remember that playing online involves some money management skills. It needs some discipline to play internet blackjack successfully.

Seasoned players of online games spend only just one percent of their total cash flow on bets. This is the most important aspect so as not to go bankrupt. Another would be to control emotions and keep cool during the games. Whether you win or loose remember that you are playing to have fun. That's it you are not there to be stressed and go broke but to enjoy and have fun. The online game is not for the faint hearted it's for the ones who have mastery over ones self and never be slave by money or emotions.

Our Little Way

Last Saturday, hubby and I celebrated the trio's birthday in our own little way.  I baked a chocolate cake and served it as dessert after our Italian dinner.  We ate a pasta dish in carbonara style. For our drink we had a healthy beetroot and mix vegetable Tipco fruit juice instead of wine.

Photos will be posted soon =)

Callback Systems to Increase Sales

November 19, 2007

Today, marketing online is getting tech savvy. Replying to customer inquiry fast is the name of the game. When customers are interested in some product they could leave their phone number on the site and this information is used to alert you on your mobile phone. After receiving the alert, you can immediately call back and attend to your client's inquiry. It can also send some information entered on some web forms to be sent to the mobile phone. It's fully customizable which criteria are satisfied to send the alert.

I have seen www.protexters.com on the net, a company which provides this kind of service. They provide free sample of the service. This is a cost effective way of communicating with clients which leads to increase in sales.

A Day full of Friends and Fun

Our weekend schedule is a little bit hectic. We have regular activities every Sunday but the last one is a different one. In the morning we started of with a mass in Korea House then we have a double birthday celebration. One for our parish priest Fr. Joe Maier and another one was of our grandson Carlo. It's really a festive mood since we have a small presentation after the mass. The Indonesia folks sung happy birthday in Bahasa language. The kids danced to a modern hip-hop dance which really amazed all the viewers.

It would not be complete without the foods. Imagine lots of Filipino dish like "humba" (broiled pork), the all time favorite spaghetti, chocolate and carrot cake, beef steak and many more. Just too many to enumerate but I could not believe that  3 big rice cooker full of rice was finished. Anyway those are some of life's simple pleasures here in AIT community.

Bootylicious

In urbandictionary.com it simply defines curvaceous or voluptuous especially in the derrière. I'm getting a little brainiac with my new assignment.  Good thing there's Answers.com which comes in handy.

For now my interest is on fashion.  Not urban fashion but in the bundocs (mountain area). I'm trying to explore some interesting hiking boots designs for women because I normally use sandals when I go trekking.  I remember one time when we went to Mambucal Mountain Resort,  we took the narrow stairs from first falls to the seventh.  It was fun but I just worry that tiny slugs might stick on my feet and suck my blood. It's gross and I saw few along way.

Rocky Hunting Boots are so cool. Reminding me of my mountaineer friend Christine P.
